Toxic Leadership, Destructive Leadership, and Identity Leadership: What are the Relationships and Does Follower Personality Matter?

Integrating leadership theories and understanding the interactions between these is a goal for many scholars. The dark side of has become topic interest researchers practitioners alike in recent years. Dark likened to poison an organization, embedding toxins company’s culture instilling deep-rooted behaviors, attitudes, actions that are source internal organizational decay. After viewing brief introductory video, this article uses cross-sectional design investigate followers’ evaluations potential leader’s toxic leadership, destructive identity propensities. Relevant theory relating constructs reviewed empirically tested clarify how topics interrelate. Most studies examining follower personality attributions have focused on positive styles (e.g., transformation or transactional). This study addresses gap literature several ways. First, we examine related characteristics. We perceived relationship variables varies based follower’s personality, need identified previous studies. Further, contributes Pelletier’s (2012) discussion lack research considers leader-follower relationships context leadership. Specifically, influence evaluations, role explored as moderating variable. These results support from others showing affects interpretation actions. However, current extends notion show even short period contact with leader allows followers make judgements about leader.
